The 2014 World Cup will take place in Brazil from 12 June to 13 July.  It will be the second time that Brazil has hosted the competition, the previous being in 1950. 32 countries will take part in this important event and a total 64 matches will be played on 12 stadiums.

The first round, called group stage, will see the 32 teams divided into 8 groups of 4 teams. Each group will compete in a round-robin of six games, where each team will play one match against each of the other teams in the same group. In group A we will see Brazil, Croatia, Mexico and Cameroon, with Brazil obviously being the best team. The top-ranked soccer nation, Spain, will play with the Netherlands, Chile and Australia in group B, while group C will include such teams as Colombia, Greece, Corte d’Ivorie and Japan. In group D we will see three strong teams: England, Italy and Uruguay, as well as very weak Costa Rica. France is the best team in group E, which will also include such countries as  Switzerland, Ecuador and Honduras. Superstar Lionel Messi is expected to lead Argentina past a relatively weak Group F, which will include Bosnia & Herzegovina, Iran and Nigeria. Germany, Portugal, Ghana and USA will meet in group G, and according to oddsmakers Germany has the best chance to win in this group. In group H we will see matches played by Belgium, Algieria, Russia and South Korea.

The teams finishing first and second in each group will progress to the knockout stage, which will involve the 16 teams that advanced from the group stage of the tournament. There will be four rounds of matches, with each round eliminating half of the teams entering that round. The successive rounds are quarter-finals, semi-finals, and the final. There will also be a play-off to decide third and fourth place.
