Betclic enters the Portugeese sports-betting market
The operator informed on its website, that the company starts offering their services on the Portuguese market, but the service will be available also for all other Portuguese-speaking punters. Last week, the company went live with their new Portugal version of the website – Betclic.pt, where all the Portuguese-speaking punters are able to comfortably put wagers and watch sport events broadcasted from all over the world.
Betclic manages to secure the license after only one year from the Portugal allowed the legislation of the online gambling market. The need for legislation in Portugal was introduced by Troika, which is a body including European Commission, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund; they asked the authorities in Portugal to regulate their laws in that matter, in 2011.
The license was granted to Betclic by the Portuguese local regulator Serviço Regulação e Inspeção de Jogos do Turismo de Portugal (SRIJ). It is valid for the period of three years and can be renewed after that time.
For now, the company aims at developing the sports-betting sector in Portugal, however, there is also the possibility of establishing services offering online poker and casino, which is regulated by the Portuguese law as well. Nevertheless, establishing such platforms, which will offer online poker and casino to players in Portugal, soul require from Betclic acquiring a separate license; similarly, if Betclic would like to include to their offer horse racing betting and bingo, would also have to try to obtain a license.
Unfortunately, with Betclic coming to the stage, several major companies acting on the same market have decided to resign from developing its services for the Portuguese players and withdraw from the country. The companies that made such a decision include among others William Hill, Betfair and Amaya’s Full Tilt and PokerStars brands.
